Patient Engagement

Nothing is more meaningful than patient engagement in achieving remarkable patient experiences and better outcomes. This is exactly what puts top-tier hospitals at the top.
— Tom Scaletta MD, President, Smart-ER

Patient engagement is communication that encompasses any form of information exchange and that leads to active patient participation and improved health.

Patient engagement occurs through multimodal, trustful, responsive, ongoing communication involving all stakeholders (i.e., patients, providers, and payers).

Patient engagement intends to improve outcomes for stakeholders, which can be subdivided into quality, utilization, efficiency, satisfaction, and teamwork (QUEST).

Stage 2 of meaningful use is an upcoming condition of participation in Medicare and Medicaid.   Hospitals and providers are scrambling to meet the core requirements, which include patient and family engagement.

Technology must tether patients, providers, and processes. For instance, providers must use secure electronic messaging to communicate with patients on relevant health issues.  Patients must use health information technology such that at least 5% begin viewing their medical information online.

Patient engagement technology links to portals where patients can communicate with providers and find educational material and test results.

Aside from the dollars tied to meaningful use, patient engagement is essential to build loyalty and hospitals will be unable to achieve favorable operating margins without it. Patient engagement drives volume, which drives revenue.

Smart-ER represents patient engagement technology and improves outcomes through the Smart use of communication technology resulting in an Engaged Response. A small investment in Smart-ER yields a dramatic return in patient engagement.
